Our opinion about Look ‘n’ Feel
4 September 2008 – 17:22 by LeelooDesigning a whole new user interface is not an easy task. You have to enhance the user experience, keep in mind ergonomics and user habits, freshen the boring desktop up and allow the final user to adapt the interface to his tastes.
The Gdium Liberty holds several bundles of applications and we had to find a way to make these apps within close reach without cluttering the 1024×600 display. We use tabs in a main launcher to tidy the desktop up and add some widgets around so that the simplified interface will get neater and more useful.
Easy access to most-used applications.

Our app launcher holds 6 pre-configured tabs under which you will find shortcuts to launch most useful software.
Above you see the Gdium tab, the default tab on which the launcher will display. The Gdium tab includes an icon to get to our community platform (which will be located on gdium.com), other icons to quickly access all your documents, arranged by type and shortcuts to E-mails, Instant Messaging and Internet phone calling.
Other tabs are Surf The Web with its websites bookmarks, Learn with twenty educational software accessible via lessons subject icon, Work that holds the needed office apps, Play with multimedia and other entertaining software, and to tweak your system.
With this launcher, you will easily find and quickly launch more than fifty different applications, view and edit your documents within a two-click reach. Along with the launcher, sitting on your desktop we have added 4 desklets so that you can keep on being productive and reach your personal infos in a timely manner.
Keep your picture under sight.

This slick little widget will slideshow your favorite pictures. You can browse them by clicking on the left or right arrows and display them on fullscreen by clicking on them.
Configuring the widget is easy, by selecting the folder you want to show and setting the time you want your slideshow to run.
As there is no maximum display limit, you can slideshow your entire photo collection and enjoy them all on your desktop.
Never wonder what to wear.

Being a ultra-portable laptop, we know you are going to hump the Gdium Liberty along with you. And we would not want to let you catch a cold or forget to pack you sun cream on your travels, would we ? So now, you can keep track on the date, the time and the 5-day weather forecast for any city you want, thanks to the weather widget right on the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
Be aware at all times.

There is so much going on nowadays, it has become difficult to keep up… To help you cope with daily information, we have thought of developing a simple RSS widget so that you can access the latest piece of news.
Just feed the little fellow with some RSS links and it will show you what’s up. Clicking on one item will launch a full news reader so that you can read the entire news feed.
Read your emails as soon as they arrive.

No more abusive clicking on the “Get Mail” button. Just wait for the freshly-received emails to show up in this box.
Setting up a mailbox for this widget is easy as pie, would you happen to own a POP email account or an IMAP one.
The comfort to get your fresh load of emails right under your nose, without having to ask for it, is incomparable.
